Dr.
Anna Maria D’Ascanio
RHEUMATOLOGIST
I graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Pisa, specialized in Rheumatology at the University of Pisa, and in Allergology and Clinical Immunology at the University of Pisa. I obtained my PhD in Experimental Rheumatology from the University of Siena. I worked clinically at the Rheumatology Unit in Pisa as a first-level Medical Director in the role of department head. I am an adjunct professor at the School of Specialization in Rheumatology and Allergology and Clinical Immunology at the University of Pisa.
I also worked as a medical assistant for General Medicine for the DEU activities at Pisa Hospital for 8 years. I have conducted laboratory activities with a particular focus on systemic autoimmune diseases at the Rheumatology Unit in Pisa.
The rheumatologist is a figure not well known by everyone, let’s say that often “when a problem cannot be solved, you go to the rheumatologist.” In fact, rheumatology is a branch that resembles General Medicine as rheumatologic diseases often have a systemic involvement affecting various organs and systems, and are not confined to the joints as often thought. Specifically, systemic autoimmune diseases such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Systemic Sclerosis, and Sjogren’s Syndrome can have multi-organ involvement, as can diseases with predominantly joint involvement like rheumatoid arthritis. There are also diseases like fibromyalgia that can present with widespread pain in every part of the body, often very debilitating, and for which various specialists may have already been consulted without benefit. Fibromyalgia is often a disease that needs to be well understood, explained to the patient, with whom a collaborative relationship is established to seek improvement.
The rheumatologist deals with joint involvement in both systemic and chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis, as well as crystalline arthritis (gout and chondrocalcinosis) and degenerative forms such as osteoarthritis. They deal with extra-articular rheumatisms such as fibromyalgia, muscle involvement diseases like myositis, bone diseases like osteoporosis, and diseases that are commonly associated with other specialists such as tendinopathies and neuropathies.
Since 2018, I have been working in an outpatient clinic at the Minihospital Sandro Pertini.
I am very fortunate to have always loved my job and the relationship with patients who have been and are my most precious collaborators
