Psychiatry

The psychiatrist deals with mental distress and various symptoms, analyzes their physiological mechanisms, and employs pharmacological or psychotherapeutic treatments. They evaluate the clinical course in subsequent sessions.

The psychiatric consultation

During the psychiatric examination, the specialist seeks to identify signs indicative of psychopathology, such as alterations in speech rhythm and fluency, psychomotor activity, facial expression and mimicry, tendency to cry, hallucinatory behavior, and the conception of delusional ideas.

Additionally, during the psychiatric consultation, the specialist gathers all data and information related to the patient’s clinical history, also for the purpose of a differential diagnosis with syndromes that are not strictly psychiatric.

The interview aims to allow the doctor to reconstruct the signs of the onset of psychological distress, shed light on any previous psychopathological episodes, inquire about past or ongoing pharmacological treatments, and any previous hospitalizations.

It also analyzes the socio-economic context in which the person lives, proposing, if deemed useful, socio-assistance interventions both within the family context and beyond.
