A state-of-the-art clinic for a comprehensive eye examination

At MiniHospital “Sandro Pertini,” it is possible to undergo a comprehensive eye examination, capable of providing a complete picture of the patient’s clinical situation and offering all the necessary indications for specific treatments and interventions.  Ophthalmology responsable is a seasoned professional, il Dr. Emanuele Bonadio.

Dr. Bonadio has gained over thirty years of experience in the surgical treatment of cataracts and glaucoma, performing over 10,000 surgeries as the lead surgeon. Additionally, he possesses specific expertise in corneal pathology, pediatric ophthalmology, and the treatment of certain eye conditions (such as diabetes, thrombosis, and glaucoma) using Argon laser and Yag laser.

The ophthalmology clinic at MiniHospital “Sandro Pertini” is equipped with state-of-the-art tools necessary to conduct all major diagnostic investigations, not only vision tests but also comprehensive eye examinations.

Ophthalmologic examination’s tools

To conduct targeted investigations and precisely evaluate the patient’s visual conditions and consequently their clinical status, the ophthalmology clinic at MiniHospital “Sandro Pertini” is equipped with the following instruments:

  1. Topographer: This instrument evaluates the condition of the cornea, diagnosing various conditions including keratoconus and irregular astigmatism. It also allows for the assessment of the tear film.
  2. Slit Lamp: Also known as a slit-lamp biomicroscope, this optical instrument is used to observe ocular tissues. It enables visualization of the eyeball and its adnexa, corneal layers, vitreous, anterior chamber, lens, and iris.
  3. Pneumotonometer: This instrument measures intraocular pressure, essential for glaucoma prevention and follow-up. Using an optical sensor, it detects corneal flattening caused by a puff of air.
  4. Autorefractometer: This tool accurately assesses the degree of myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism. It also evaluates the transparency of ocular media (cornea and lens), identifying any opacities (leukoma or cataract).
  5. Computerized Perimeter: This device stimulates the retina with small flashes of light and analyzes the patient’s responses through dedicated software. It measures the visual field, the portion of space visible to each eye when the patient looks straight ahead. This examination can be performed to verify and monitor the presence of optic nerve inflammation, glaucoma, or neurologic and neuro-ophthalmologic conditions over time.
  6. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT): Another crucial instrument for a comprehensive eye examination. The clinic has state-of-the-art OCT technology that provides micrometric details of retinal alterations.
  7. Biometer: This is the primary instrument for preparing cataract surgery. It is used to calculate the specifications of the lens that will replace the “defective” one.

All the instruments described above are non-invasive, meaning they allow for the respective investigations to be performed without any contact with the eye and without the instillation of drops.

The laser for the treatment of ophthalmic pathologies

In addition to diagnostic instruments, the ophthalmology clinic at MiniHospital “Sandro Pertini” is equipped with two instruments for the treatment of ocular pathologies: Yag and Argon lasers.

The Yag laser acts on the anterior segment of the eye and is used to treat so-called secondary cataracts, caused by the opacification of a membrane that forms behind the lens replaced after cataract surgery. It can also be used to perform iridectomy, a technique to address patients suffering from “closed-angle” glaucoma and prevent acute glaucoma attacks.

The Argon laser is employed for the posterior segment of the eye and has multiple applications on the retina. For instance, it is used for the treatment of diabetes-related pathologies (photocoagulation to prevent hemorrhages and retinal neovascularization) or for applications on retinal breaks to prevent detachment.
