Dott. Salvatore Metrangolo

GASTROENTEROLOGIST

Dr. Salvatore Metrangolo earned his degree in Medicine and Surgery in 1988 from the University of Pisa, and subsequently specialized in Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy at the same medical faculty.

He began his career in General Medicine at USL 5 in Pisa and in Emergency Medicine at the Emergency Department of ASL TO 4 in Piedmont. He also carried out, after specific training, activities related to addiction management and complex alcohol-related problems at USL 6 in Livorno and USL 4 in Omegna. Subsequently, he was temporarily assigned and then permanently appointed (until 31/12/23) as a medical manager at the Gastroenterology Department of AOUP. Initially assigned to the sub-intensive therapy unit, he focused on the medical and endoscopic treatment of bleeding and non-bleeding complications of portal hypertension in cirrhotic patients.

His experience in the treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding in a reference center with an endoscopic examination volume between 9,000-10,000/year has been shared in numerous conferences, scientific publications, and multicenter studies (particularly noteworthy is his significant contribution to the Italian multicenter study on the evaluation of mortality risk factors for gastrointestinal bleeding). His endoscopic activity was subsequently expanded with successful participation (also in collaboration with the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome) in multicenter studies on the feasibility of endoscopic treatment of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease and its complications. The endoscopic horizon has also been broadened over the years with the application of new technologies for the diagnostic study of small intestine pathologies (particularly obscure/occult bleeding) both with standard enteroscopy and capsule endoscopy.

His most recent experiences involve the use of robotic colonoscopy with E-Worm and the GI Genius device for the application of artificial intelligence in endoscopy. Since 2016, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) have become the field of greatest interest and commitment due to his appointment for the management of complex patients with chronic inflammatory intestinal diseases at the Center, both in outpatient and inpatient settings, as well as in DH (for the management and follow-up of new therapies with biological drugs). He is currently a member of scientific societies such as Ig-IBD (Italian Group for the study of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases) and AIGO (Italian Association of Hospital Gastroenterologists), of which he was also the regional secretary for Tuscany.

In terms of social activities, his most rewarding experiences have been those carried out with patient associations and those at the University of the Elderly.
