Anesthesiology

Anesthesiology is the specialization that deals with the control of pain sensitivity and the level of consciousness through the administration of drugs or gases: before, during, and after surgery or an endoscopic procedure.

The anesthesiology consultation precedes all types of interventions, except for simpler outpatient procedures, and the anesthesiologist gathers information about diseases, allergies, any previous surgeries, and other relevant data to obtain a comprehensive picture of the patient’s health. This allows them to assess the most suitable type of anesthesia and any potential risks that may arise during the procedure.

Pain therapy

Pain therapy, also called analgesic therapy, is a medical specialization that deals with the treatment of all forms of pain, especially chronic pain. It addresses all patients experiencing pain, particularly if it is chronic or persistent. Chronic pain doesn’t only refer to pain caused by tumors, but also to everyday common pains.

Analgesic therapy relies on the use of targeted medications to treat the individual, often employing not only drugs but also injections or minor procedures.

The epidural injection is a common treatment option available to manage many forms of lower back pain and sciatica. In addition to treating lower back and sciatic pain, epidural injections can also be used to control pain in the neck and thoracic (mid-back) regions.

The injection delivers medication directly into the epidural space around the spinal cord. A solution containing corticosteroids (steroids), a small amount of local anesthetic (lidocaine or bupivacaine), and saline solution (physiological) is injected into the epidural space.
