In addition to a thorough personal and family medical history, the specialist, in order to carry out targeted investigations to accurately assess the patient’s visual conditions and consequently their clinical status, uses a corneal topographer, slit lamp, pneumotonometer, autorefractor, computerized perimeter, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and biometer.
Some ocular pathologies may be due to systemic diseases, such as diabetes (diabetic retinopathy), or hereditary conditions, so the ophthalmologist often requests complementary blood tests and instrumental examinations.
