November is men’s urological health awareness month

The prostate is under special watch because identifying potential conditions early can be crucial for diagnosis and successful treatment outcomes.
The prostate is a gland of the male reproductive system, located between the bladder and the ampulla of the vas deferens. Typically the size of a small chestnut, it surrounds the urethra and is encased in a rigid fibrous capsule.
The prostate may face various conditions, including prostatitis (benign inflammation), benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and prostate cancer.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia is the progressive enlargement of the prostate gland, which is correlated with aging. It causes obstructive symptoms (difficulty urinating) and irritative symptoms such as urgency and frequent urination.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common diseases, with its incidence having tripled over the past 20 years. The risk significantly increases in individuals over 60. For instance, men aged between 60 and 79 have a 1 in 8 chance of developing prostate cancer.

Age, genetic and hormonal factors, diet, smoking, and environmental conditions are the main risk factors for developing prostate cancer. When not accompanied by BPH, prostate cancer often does not cause symptoms in its early stages. For this reason, preventive measures are crucial, especially for men aged 45-50 and older. Early diagnosis allows timely intervention for effective treatment of prostate cancer.

At Minihospital, throughout November, we offer a prevention package that includes a blood test to determine PSA levels and a specialist urological consultation with lower abdominal and transrectal ultrasound. Additionally, Minihospital provides a dedicated pathway for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, including a series of evaluations aimed at identifying not only this condition but also potential cancer-related issues.
