Endocrinology
Endocrinology focuses on the study of internal secretion glands, analyzing their productive activity and general functionality. Internal secretion glands are defined as those that release their secretions (hormones) directly into the circulating fluids of the human body: thyroid, parathyroid, pituitary, pineal, thymus, adrenal glands, endocrine pancreas, interstitial gland of the testicle, interstitial gland of the ovary. Hormones are essential for their role in our body, as they help regulate metabolism, growth, reproduction, and sexual development.
The conditions treated by the endocrinologist are multiple, including diabetes, tumors of the endocrine glands, metabolic diseases (dyslipidemia, obesity, gout), thyroid diseases, infertility (female and male), erectile dysfunction, growth and puberty disorders, disorders and diseases of the female reproductive system including menopause, hirsutism, polycystic ovary syndrome, osteoporosis and bone fragility, pancreatic diseases, multisystemic diseases (hypertension).
Endocrinology treatment and depth test
The endocrinologist’s visit, in addition to a thorough medical history of the patient and their family, as many conditions are hereditary, for a correct assessment, requires laboratory tests and diagnostic imaging. Some pathological conditions affecting the endocrine glands need to be investigated through the stimulation or inhibition of the gland’s function by administering agents that stimulate or inhibit the gland’s activity.
Many endocrinological pathologies are chronic and require lifelong treatment as well as frequent laboratory tests and follow-up visits.
