Both specialties deal with traumatic and degenerative pathologies related to the musculoskeletal system. The orthopedic surgeon’s expertise covers the field of physiotherapy, so they have a broad understanding of the physiology of bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons; and easily recognize bone fractures and osteoarthritis.

In recent years, innovative techniques have been introduced that allow the regeneration of damaged tissues through the collection of multi-potent cells from the same patient, which allow many patients to slow down degeneration and delay the need for surgery.
The most used methods with proven benefits are PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) which consists of a simple sampling from peripheral blood which, centrifuged in a specific way, is then injected into the injured tissue or the sampling of cells from abdominal adipose tissue (liposuction) which once adequately filtered, they are injected into the injured tissue, showing enormous regenerative capacity.

The orthopedic visit and depth tests

To diagnose a condition, the orthopedic surgeon must first collect the patient’s symptoms along with their medical history, and after a thorough evaluation of the musculoskeletal system, possibly perform a series of useful investigations such as: musculoskeletal ultrasound, targeted X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging, or CT scans.

Laboratory tests are often necessary to identify inflammatory states and any rheumatic diseases.

The orthopedic surgeon might also recommend, after precise diagnostics, the need for surgical procedures such as:

Joint and arthroscopic surgery of the knee, hip, and shoulder (with possible bone tissue implants)
Foot and hand surgery (correction of bunions, hammer toes, Morton’s neuroma, trigger fingers, carpal tunnel)
Spinal surgery (disc herniation, posterolateral fusion).
